i was sitting around the house on a saturday morning and i looked at this old leather briefcase propped in a corner, a briefcase my wife gave me that i use to store small format paintings. and i realized i had to paint it, something about the color and texture of the leather. or maybe it was fate ... the hand of fate. anyway, i painted it in one pass on a full sheet, about four hours of work. the vase with dried flowers in it, that's my heart, the briefcase is my job, and the catalog is from a manet exhibit — that's art. (i know, i should jabber deconstructionist or lacanist, but contemporary art patter makes me puke.) the vase is also in the sunflower painting.
