A large resort or small village, rooms and terraces, interconnected. I am part of a large organization, a messenger or spy, trying to contact leaders of good. Two forces at odds, the bad ones trying to stop me. Professor Mussen's address book. I find the leaders, common people who are organizing to fight, but I am not included in the circle of decision makers. Weeping for fear at the awesome battle shaping up. Men everywhere arming themselves...
Nancy's dad driving in a compact to a lecture or sermon; all of us sitting on the grass before a speaker who is dressed in white. I ask her dad what became of Nancy. "She's in Arizona, a town called Bright, and is in music." I ask about her circumstances. "She's rich - can take any box you give her and fill it with money." I ask questions like "Why doesn't your government allow free speech?" and feel a little bit ridiculous. A man walks by, and someone tells him how much they like his book. He snaps his umbrella open, smartly and with pride. The cover of the book is red and orange...
On a newly opened freeway across the Bay, the tarmac is perfectly flat. The roadway drops right off into the water below us. Pam is driving us; others are in the back calling out "You're too close!" or "There's water!" as we skirt the curb. The road divides at Treasure Island - one lane leading to Berkeley and the other to Richmond. I wonder which one we should take...
